PRIMARY SCHOOL

"Acquiring basic knowledge and opening up to the world"

As defined by the French Ministry of Education, the aim of Primary School is to provide children with basic learning tools, i.e. oral and written expression, reading, and mathematics. The teaching provided at the French School of Singapore stimulates intelligence, artistic sensitivity, manual and physical skills, and athletic abilities. It provides children with a basic grounding of music and arts and, in partnership with the family, aims at giving them moral and civic education.

In order to offer the flexibility needed by each individual, Primary School is made up of different key stages:

* Primary 1 and 2 (Key Stage 2) particularly emphasise French and Mathematics. It is interesting to note that English-speaking students who join primary school quickly become fluent in French. Extra classes of French as a Foreign Language are offered to children whose mother tongue is not French.
* In Primary 3, 4 and 5 (Key Stage 3), in addition to French and Mathematics, students are introduced to History, Geography and Science, in order to prepare their entry into lower Secondary School.

In addition to the subjects mentioned above, the teaching of English ranges from 3 1/4 hours a week in Primary 1 to 5 1/4 hours a week from Primary 3 onwards. English is taught by trained native-speakers. An initiation to Mandarin is offered from Primary 3. Language classes are streamed in order to offer all pupils lessons adapted to their levels.

In order to foster the development of each student, a large number of activities are offered, ranging from sports to music and from arts to computer science and drama. These activities may be offered as part of the curriculum or as extra-curricular activities.

Primary 3 and 4 classes go on a one-week school trip, allowing them to broaden their horizons and benefit from a unique experience. This year's destination was Malaysia.
