HOW BILINGUAL CLASSES WORK |
From this school year (2007-2008), bilingual classes benefit from tandem
teaching :
Once a week, both teachers, English and French, teach the same class
and set up activities according to their class project in both languages.
Pupils can speak in French or English in accordance with clearly defined
rules.
Both teachers share two classes. Each teacher has a classroom with a
French display for the French classroom, and an English display for
the English classroom.
To allow the children to adapt more easily and for family reception,
children are welcomed every morning into the same classroom (classroom
of reference) and only after this time can movement between classes
begin.
How bilingual classes in cycle 1 work
:
In MS
- Pupils do the same activities in English or in French.
- Every day children change classes , one day they are in the French
classroom, the following day in the English classroom.
MS bilingual class project 2007/2008 : illustrated book creation
In GS
It will follow the same system as in MS and will continue the learning
begun in MS
Teachers work according to fixed objectives for two weeks : the same
objectives, but activities may sometimes differ in English and French.
GS bilingual class projects 2007/2008 :
- work on the 5 senses
- creation of illustrated books
Between monolingual and bilingual classes
(cycle 1)
Bilingual classes operate in the same way as other classes in the kindergarten
and are involved in the same activities (such as discovering local cultures,
the school magazine
) only the language changes.
How bilingual classes in cycle 2 work
:
In CP
Teaching in French and English will be alternated on a half-daily basis.
Schedules and programme planning are prepared during the teachers' meetings.
Subjects are shared between teachers, but time will be taken to study
the vocabulary in the other language.
Reading
Pupils learn reading in both languages ; however some notions are learnt
only once and reinvested in the other language.
Pedagogic resources
Mathematics is taught using the same textbook in French and in English.
The English reading method is " Jolly Phonics ", completed
with "Fitzroy Readers".
CP bilingual class projects :
- world discovery : the body
- drama
In CE1
It will follow the same system as in CP . However, teaching in French
and English will be alternated on a daily basis.
Pedagogic resources
Mathematics is taught using the same textbook in French and in English.
In English reading and writing, the teacher follows the method started
in CP with " Jolly Grammar " and the illustrated books of
" Fitzroy Readers ".
Assessment : Assessment of pupils' skills will be carried out
in the teaching language. Assessments are sometimes bilingual, depending
on the notions learnt.
CE1 bilingual class projects :
- cross-curricular project : animals
- reading challenge
Difference between monolingual and bilingual
classes (cycle 2)
Concerning GS and CP, teachers ensure a link between the bilingual
GS and the bilingual CP classes.
In cycle 2, teachers of bilingual classes set up bilingual projects
and are also involved in common projects with the monolingual classes.
All the class projects are relevant to the school development plan.
A bilingual lexical notebook will be built up throughout cycle1 and
cycle2.
As a bilingual 6ème class is planned, a link between CM2 and
6ème will be set up.
