As a French school abroad, the French School of Singapore follows the same developments as the French educational system :
A well defined policy The French School also has a well-defined language policy. First, the emphasis is put on the mastery of the French language as a tool of communication that reaches beyond the realm of the classroom and the school. This applies to students whose mother tongue is French and who live in a non-French social context as well as those whose mother tongue is not French but who must benefit fully from the French curriculum. From this point of view, the use of the French language by students and staff, in class and during extra-curricular activities, is systematically preferred. However, the school also promotes an understanding of the culture and language of the host country and adds a substantial amount of English language instruction crucial to our students' complete education. Another priority: civic education This is taught both through the official curriculum which puts a stress on the importance of democratic values (e.g.: Civics is taught in Upper Secondary) and through school life itself: to help pupils become responsible citizens it is essential for all to learn about their rights and their duties, to stress the importance of the role played by all those involved in this process (teachers and other staff, pupils, families) and to decide on school rules together. It is also achieved through the role given to the different "councils" (school/ teachers'/class councils), the training of pupils' representatives as well as the information given to parents' representatives. Our school's local environment also contributes to this education as it encourages the positive comparison of habits, rules and values and provides opportunities to open up to different cultures. One of our school's objectives is to involve outsiders in its activities and deliberations, to work in partnership with other cultural institutions and to become the centre of a new community life where civic education can be put into practice. An asset: Excellence is a characteristic of the French School Each year, the remarkable results in the French Baccalaureate show that our education system is based on a well-balanced curriculum that uses the diversity of our pupils' nationalities and our local environment to its advantage. An important mission: the successful education of all pupils is emphasised, as no child should be left behind. That is why teaching methods take into account individual needs and remedial classes are organised. |
